The Outer Banks are sandy barrier islands stretching for over 130 miles along the North Carolina coast. With a history dating back to 1587, this is not only an area of pristine beaches but it is also rich with early American history. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island is where Sir Walter Raleigh attempted settlement in the late 1500s. Today, the site is home to the Waterside Theater, a visitor's center, and a picturesque nature trail. There is also the Wright Brothers National Memorial located on Kill Devil Hills. This is the location of the world's first controlled power flight and full scale reproductions of the 1903 Powered Flyer are currently on display.

With 409 square miles of water, the Outer Banks are also a great place for water sports. Fishing, sailing, and kayaking are among the many watersport activities the Outer Banks have to offer. Just want to relax? The Outer Banks have numerous secluded beaches for anyone to get away and enjoy nature. Beach fires are allowed with a permit in most areas; a perfect way to end the day in paradise.
