I have sailed along this coastline in a small yacht and frankly the islands, the restaurants, the atmosphere and the local people's friendliness doesn't compare with the Greek Islands or more especially the Turkish islands, which are the best of the three. But Croatia was still communist when I was there in a boat, so maybe it is better now. I have been to Dubrovnik recently and things do seem to have improved on the friendliness front and English is now more widely spoken whereas it used to be German that was the foreign language of choice. The islands have few beaches and this is the Adriatic, so the sea is less clean and clear than in the 'open' Med.

Otok Korcula

Korcula is one of the largest and most populated of the Dalmatian Islands and although densely wooded and rocky in appearance, it is also one of the greenest.

There are lots of smaller uninhabited islands off Korcula’s crenelated coastline of bays and secluded beaches. As well as its attractive scenery and clear Mediterranean weather, Korcula is also worth travelling to for its traditional culture including a famous sword dance and its history. Marco Polo was reportedly born in the main town, also called Korcula, a walled medieval city complete with round defence towers and traditional red tiled roofs.

The area has been known through history for its sailing and shipbuilding traditions, but now the big trade is in olives, grapes and citrus fruits. Korcula has been a popular tourist destination for over 2,000 years, but it’s still surprisingly not too crowded.
