Two adjacent volcanoes perching next to each other in Lake Nicaragua formed this figure eight shaped island, active cone shaped Volcán Concepción to the north and dormant and grown over in fertile tropical rainforests, Volcán Madera to the south. Plants love the volcanic soil and Ometepe has become a popular destination for eco-tourists. Growing plantains and tourism are the island’s main sources of income with coffee and tobacco plantations coming in third and fourth.
