Listed under Islands in Dodecanese Islands, Greece.
Nisyros is a conical volcanic island on the volcanic seem that also links Kos and Tilo covered in interesting craters and fumaroles which still steam and spit – the volcano is active but not erupting, the last eruption was a steam explosion in 1888, so it's not something visitors need take caution over. Despite the potential drama and littering of interesting pumice, rich soil conditions that support lush crops, pretty villages populated with traditional stone houses, and coastline with both pebbly and sandy beaches, this isn't a particularly visited island – which is actually the island's big draw. A castle built by the Knights Hospitaller, four monasteries, and several orthodox churches are the island's other attractions, as well as the colourful tavernas and cafes. This is the kind of town to come to if you want to sit outside in the square in the evening listening to the chatter and the sound of the sea and watching the sun set over a particularly spectacular window of the world.
