Mount Desert Island’s interior is mostly part of Arcadia National Park and its coastline is a rocky line of bays, caves and inlets. The region’s rounded mountains, rolling hills and long smooth lakes were shaped by a vast continental glacier which once covered the region. There are 17 mountains on the island and plenty of good walking tracks in the National Park so this is an ideal island to visit if you enjoy hiking or cycling. There are also several good swimming spots to enjoy during the warmer months.

The main town on the island is Bar Harbour, famous for being a retreat of the wealthy between the 1880’s and the 1940’s and now many of the mansions from that heyday have been transformed into Bed and Breakfasts. There is good sailing from a deepwater harbour on the islands north and kayaking on the ocean and the islands long lakes.
