The mountainous forest-covered island of Miyajima rises from Japan's Inland Sea and features the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating to the 12th century. This is one of the traditional "Three Scenic Views" of Japan. The colorful shrine is famous for its "floating" torii gate that rises from the sea just offshore. In addition to the shrine the island has many hiking trails through the forest and up Mt. Misen where there are Buddhist temples and expansive views over the Inland Sea. Friendly deer are frequently encountered on the trails. The momiji or Japanese maple trees turn a flaming scarlet here in autumn.
