In the middle of the Danube, in the middle of Budapest, is a lovely island covered in parks and medieval churches and ruins.

Charmingly the island was named for Saint Margaret, the daughter of one of the Hungarian Kings, who lived in a Dominican convent on the island. The different religious orders are well represented on the island, there is also the ruins of a Franciscan church and the ruins of a building which housed an Augustinian order.

More pragmatic visitors may further appreciate an art nouveau water tower – now a museum, a small Japanese Garden with a thermal fish pond, a water fowl aviary, a pavilion for concerts, a rubber jogging track and many statues. Mostly it’s just a really really nice place to plan a picnic.

Great on a summers day...

A very nice place to spend a hot summers day. The swimming baths are excellent (5 pools!). Pay attention to the complex pool locker system though, otherwise you will never get your things back!
