Lesbos has mountainous terrain. The island also features volcanic hot springs, a recurring theme in Greek mythology. However, the most interesting aspect of the island is perhaps its petrified forest. Declared a 'protected natural monument', this is one of a few such forests in the world.

It is believed to have become petrified due to the volcanic activity that was prevalent in the island's past. The plants that are preserved here are as old as 10 million years old.
