Compared to Hong Kong and Kowloon, Lamma Island is tranquil – but that doesn’t mean it’s dead. There’s no proper cars, just mini trucks, and no buildings over three storeys high, so you have to get around on foot or get a bike. The main port, and populated bit, is Yung Shue Wan (Banyan Bay), where there’s some decent seafood restaurants, pubs and stores selling gift-y handycraft-y things.

If you have a bit of time you can take a very scenic walk between the two main villages, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwo Wan – which also has streets of seafood restaurants - or stroll though quiet forests.

It takes between 20 and 35 minutes to get to Lamma by irregular ferry service, which could be why it’s known for being a bit boho and for throwing a great beach party.
