So close and so far – La Gomera is one of the smaller Canary Islands, but it couldn’t be too much more different from its larger siblings. Instead of the resort lined beaches and beach lined resorts, visitors will alight the hydrofoil and find banana plantations, cool rainforests, ancient trees, small, flat hamlets and in the middle, like a pointy exclamation mark in the middle of a love poem, a volcano with gorged, steep sides. Actually it’s probably more like a Terry’s chocolate orange that’s been tapped and opened.

Walkers and hikers know about this island and its bridleways and trails already – even though it’s quite a small island, 22kms across, there’s plenty of varied terrain to explore – but there are resorts and beaches as well, just less crowded ones than on the larger islands. There are some particularly lovely photos of the resort at Playa Santiago, once the island’s busiest port, now much sleepier, but most people stay in San Sebastian. They’re following in the footsteps of Columbus who stopped here for supplies.

The island’s locals set up vineyards and orchards here in Roman times and the wine is reported to be ‘distinctive’. Even more uniquely they’ve created their own whistling way of speaking, useful for calling to each other across the ravines. The language survives today because the government insists children learn it at school.
