This tiny island’s claim to fame is that it’s the resting place of a sunken city, or partly sunken city, sunk and part drowned by an earthquake in the 2nd Century. This wasn’t the last history heard of this town though, it was rebuilt in the Byzantine era, it has a Byzantine church, but was finally abandoned.

You’re not allowed to dive down to the city – too many relics have been raided – but you can swim and snorkel near the Byzantine section of ruins which have been partly absorbed into the modern town of Kale.

If you come by boat you’ll get a very nice trip past pretty coves where goats graze half way up cliffs, but if you arrive by car you can still hire a boat to take you out to the sunken city.
