Jan Mayen is a spectacular, black rock and glacier covered volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean. For a long time everyone assumed the volcano was extinct, quietly sitting there all remote - that was before it erupted in 1970, adding three square kms to its land mass. It followed up with performances again in 1973 and 1985.

Jan Mayen is a mountainous place, home to 18 people who man the radio and meteorological stations. Polar bears and blue foxes are the other inhabitants and there are regular whale sightings, suggesting the waters surrounding the island support life as well.

You can only visit Jan Mayen as part of a cruise or tour, but it's a particularly unusual place to visit.
