This island has one of the world's largest natural harbours, rocky mountains and beautiful white pebbled and fine sandy beaches. But Ithaca is best known for being the home of Odysseus, who spent most of Homer's Odyssey making his way back to these deep but bright blue waters, green hillsides and pretty mountain villages. The name of this island hasn't changed since long before Homer's time, and archaeological digs have proven that the island's been inhabited for about 6,000 years. Homer chronicled the Ithaca of the Bronze Age, he's supposed to have written the Iliad and the Odyssey somewhere between the 6th and 8th Century, but the stories are supposed to have pre-dated his tale.

Most of the inhabitants live in the main port towns, and unfortunately many of the prettiest and most authentic mountain towns have been abandoned, though their architecture is protected by law.
