Maddalena is known for its beaches, pretty sandy coves between granite outcrops that can make you feel like you have the beach to yourself, albeit a small beach. The rest of the island is typified by the same rocky granite crops of boulders. The two most mentioned beaches on the island are Bassa Trinita and Cala Francese, both which are credited with lovely sounding soft, pink sand.

La Maddalena is in a pretty key strategic position, which has been a bit unfortunate for the people who’ve lived here who’ve been under siege from the Romans, the Piedmontese, the French under Bonaparte, and the English under Nelson who only left his ship to go to church on Sundays. It also means that the island is littered with interesting remains of the fortifications from each encounter and its main towns have paved streets and buildings dating from the 18th Century.

Visitors, including those coming for the G8 summit in 2009, have to arrive by boat, there’s no other way aboard.
