Something of a tourist hot-spot by Mozambique standards, but still pretty quiet, this tiny walkable island with its 16th century Portuguese fortress was the original capital of the country before Maputo, and is a United Nations world heritage site. It is joined to the mainland by a 3.4km long single lane causeway and is accessible from Nampula which has scheduled flights. For self flyers there is a small airport at Lumbo on the mainland. We stayed in a quaint guest house of which there are a number on the island as well as two modernish hotels both of which seemed ok, one of them with an excellent French run restaurant. The island is picturesque and is a must-see if you are in that corner of the world.
