In the off season the population of the Ile de RÈ is about 16,000 – in summer it's more like 160,000.

Cut off from the mainland except by a three kilometre long road bridge, this long, flat island is a backdrop of gently rolling sand dunes, poppy fields sprouting sunflowers and cool pine forests run through with cycle paths. Apart from the attractive surrounds Ile de RÈ is popular with visitors because of its reliable weather: it gets about the same amount of sunlight as the French Riviera, but with an almost constant light, cool breeze. The island's beaches curve gently into the sea – an attractive prospect for families.

During WW2 the beaches on one side were fortified with bunkers by the Germans, and these are now derelict monuments crouching sulkily against the sunny blue views.
