110 miles long but in some places, like the Glass Window Bridge, less than a mile wide, Eluthera, in 1648, was the location of the first successful European settlement in the Bahamas.

Though most of the island is flat and sandy (with pink and white sand), tsunamis and volcanic eruptions have helped shape Eleuthera’s coastline and there are several massive boulders lying, looking out of place, on the otherwise bare, sandy shore. There are also some interesting caves and subterranean caverns with vast rock formations.

The island's villages have retained their colonial style and since Club Med closed after Hurricane Andrew it has become quite quiet.

Eleuthera offers world class surfing at Gregory Town, good fishing spots and several well known diving and snorkelling sites. Famous for its tropical fruits, especially pineapple, Eleuthera holds a Pineapple Festival each June.
