Antigua and Barbuda are the Spanish words for ‘Ancient and Bearded’, which sounds more like Father Christmas than a collection of beautiful tropical islands surrounded by offensively bright blue seas and white sands. Christopher Columbus is responsible for the name, it’s after a church in Spain, not even because he got the impression, when he came upon the island, that it was particularly old. Instead he found an island gentled ruffled by warm steady winds flowing towards a crenulated coastline of deep safe harbours completely protected by a coral wall. These are the same attributes that have made the island a favourite for sailors, who come for Sailing Week, divers and snorkellers, as well as people who just like to relax on tropical islands.

Most visitors come for the idyllic beaches and beautiful sparking seas you imagine you would mind so much being set adrift on, but Antigua is also known for offshore banking and internet gambling. So there’s a bit of money around to fund the luxury resorts and developments that give the island such a prosperous look. Cricket is the other thing Antigua is known for these days, but it was once farmed by slaves for sugar and tobacco and it has a pretty colourful past if you’re interested in looking beyond the view.
