Like most of the Cyclades, Amorgos has clear water, whitewashed houses and windmills, archaeological sites and bright sunshine. It is also known for its sandy, cliff edged beaches and labyrinthine villages.
One of the main historical sites on the island is the Monastery of Virgin Chozoviotissa, built, impressively, in 1088 on the site of previous monastic caves into the tall cliffs on Amorogos’ coastline. This is still a functioning monastery and you can arrange for the resident monks to show you over the eight floors, carved five feet across into the cliff face.
Amorogos is also famously the location chosen for Luc Besson’s film “The Big Blue.”
It’s a good place to plan a walking trip and there are several routes marked out on the island. It’s also a good destination for divers and snorkelers.
Amorogos is very busy mid summer, but the weather is pleasant for most of the year so travellers can visit out of season.
