Listed under Houses in London, United Kingdom.
There are lots of nice houses in Hampstead, but this one is a bit special – belonging to the National Trust, it was built in the 17th Century by a merchant, and has been kept very much in its original state, complete with a large walled garden.
The last owner of the house was Lady Katherine Binning who lived here until she died in 1952 – Fenton had been occupied continuously until then. She bequeathed it to the rest of us unwashed masses, and now it's open to the public, who can stroll through admiring the Benton Fletcher collection of antique keyboards, the combined artistic merit of several collections of paintings, and Lady Binning's collections of porcelain, 17th century needlework and Georgian furniture. The garden is little altered since its planting, and has an orchard and kitchen garden.
