Overlooking the mountains and glaciers of King Oscar Fjord in East Greenland is The Red House, possibly not Tasiilaq's most luxurious accommodation but certainly some of its most memorable. The Red House functions more like a meeting place for locals and tourists than a hotel. Inuit hunters arrive to chat and play cards while visitors preparing to head out on climbing expeditions or kayaking trips pore over maps and plan their route. Although the rooms are fairly functional, they're comfortable and well-maintained, there's a sauna, a small library and freshly cooked traditional meals so you can sample local delicacies. What really makes this place stand out though, is its social conscience and involvement with local people. Local cooks, local guides and reinvestment in the community set it apart from its more commercial rivals and offer visitors a more authentic insight into life in this isolated community. With everyone from international mountaineering experts and local hunters on tap to guide your climbing, hiking, dog-sledding or kayaking trip around the area, it's the best possible base for a visit to this spectacular part of the world.
