After it was abandoned in the 1970s, a massive conservation project began on North Island. Ecologists decided to return the tiny island, choked with invasive species after years as part of the coconut farming industry, to its natural eco-system, re-introducing native species along the way. How did they fund this unprecedented reversal of the ecological clock? Simple – they built the world’s most stunningly exclusive hotel, attracted the crème de la crème of clientele, and the euros have been pouring in ever since. The really amazing thing about the North Island hotel – besides the incredible scenery, the 450 square foot villas and personal chef – is the way that it’s become part of the very conservation project that it funds. The lodge buildings recycle the island’s pre-existing shacks, as well as local materials like felled invasive trees, and turn them into luxurious masterpieces designed by artisans from all over the world. The lodge itself is entirely eco-sensitive, with minimal development – only eleven villas have been built, so noise and disruption is minimal – and maximum care taken to preserve the island’s natural resources. There’s a luxury spa, an exclusive dive centre, and you can even enjoy a romantic candlelight dinner up to your ankles in the Indian Ocean. The rates may be sky high, but the experience would be priceless.
