Fabulous hidden way hotel in the heart of old Barcelona - one of my favourites. Of all the hotels in Barcelona, the Neri is probably the most romantically positioned. Gratifyingly difficult to find, the hotel is right in the heart of the Barrio Gotic in a maze of small streets and alleyways just steps from the Cathedral. It's entrance is grand and unexpected in such an ancient space - tall double doors open up into a light, covered court area which acts as reception, its arched gothic interior and large lightwell revealing its origins as a medieval palazzo.
Any hint of tradition is soon banished, however, when you step in the lift, where a dictionary definition of the word 'sensual' is attempted on one side to prepare you for the sensual delights that apparently await you in your room. Each of the 22 is slightly different - the first floor rooms having the highest ceilings, some with beams. Floors are of wood, walls a greeny-fromage color, though colorways change slightly on each floor, with stronger colors on the second. Bathrooms are in granite; there are hanging filigree lamps beside the beds, and large colorful cushions and pillows. Each room has a large flatscreen TV and CD player, and the minbars are stocked with Moet.
With outdoor dining in a romantic off-the-beaten-track city square in summer, the Neri provides a quiet refuge in the heart of the city with panache and effortless style, and in historic surroundings.
