After a month long exam season my friends and I decided to escape from the crazy city life of Delhi. The idea of a trip to Nainital seemed to have caught everyone’s fancy in the city and we were no exceptions. Since our excitement was sky-high on the day of the departure, we spent the eight-hour non-stop ride to Nainital playing dumb charades and antakshari. Soon, the plains metamorphosed into a lush, green landscape and we were engrossed by the scenic beauty. The sun was far up in the sky and the cool, fresh mountain air seemed like heaven’s nectar after poisonous air of Delhi.
We checked in at Naini Retreat, situated on the picturesque Ayarpatta Slopes providing a breathtaking view of the Naini Lake at an altitude of 1995 meters. Naini Retreat to our surprise turned out to be the palace of Maharaja of Pilibhit, which has been restored to its present grandeur as a resort. We relaxed and had lunch before setting out to explore the beauties of nature that Nainital had in the store for us.
There was so much to do in Nainital that two days seemed a little too less to spend. What we enjoyed the most was a trek into the mountains, a golfing date at the regal hundred-year-old Raj Bhawan Golf Course, Naina Devi Temple, special cultural evening at our resort featuring performances by traditional Kumaoni artists and a yacht ride at the highest sailing club in the world.
None of us wanted to leave the cool environs of Nainital but as our bus once again set back in motion, I felt something of me left behind forever in the lap of nature.
