THEY SAY: Punta "San Vigilio" lies at the tip of Monte Baldo and stretches far into the lake, farther than the peninsula of Sirmione, exactly at that point where the lake is at its widest and most open. From there you overlook more or less the whole of Lake Garda. On the left you see the southern shore and the Rock Manerba; on the right, behind the Isle of Garda, you see the gulf of Salò as well as Gardone and Maderno. On one side of the peninsula a small bay opens, called the "Baia delle Sirene" while on the other side you'll find a small picturesque port. Nearby, a cliff called "della Stella" stands out of the water. Having moored his boat in the little port the traveller to San Vigilio in the sixteenth century was greeted by a message inscribed on a marble plaque which beseeched him to "leave trouble and woe in the city" and to appreciate and enjoy the tranquillity of the place he now found himself in. A few centuries have passed but little changed: that same tranquillity remains.... Attracted to the charm of the place, San Vigilio has hosted many famous guests, including the Tsar of Russia Alexander II, Winston Churchill, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh and more recently HRH Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos of Spain and the German president Richard Von Weizsacker.... The area has always inspired a number of poets and artists who have sung the praises of San Vigilio throughout history.
