The most famous sight on the lush Caribbean island of Dominica is the Boiling Lake, a small crater containing - as the name suggests - a boiling lake. This is only accessible to fit and experienced hikers, requiring a full day of hard hiking up and over the central mountain range of the island. The mysterious Boiling Lake churns relentlessly but getting there is just as interesting as the lake itself. The hike crosses the Valley of Desolation, a field of hissing fumaroles and small sputtering geysers. Once back at the trailhead, reward yourself with a swim of several hundred meters into the cavernous Titou Gorge, a spectacular slot canyon.
