Oh to be a pig wallowing in the mud, many children think! Mud is fun, but as you get older being covered in mud is usually an experience you pay good money for when visiting a spa, because apparently some mud has medicinal powers. The mud from the Dalyan Channels and the area around Lake Koycegiz, run though with hot, sulphurous waters, is credited with healing properties that act on rheumatism and skin disorders and some people even claim it has ‘fountain of youth’ powers.

The Sultaniye waters, the closest to town, have been built up into a colourful, muddy tourist attraction with a beach section for letting the mud harden and a rounded pool of thermal water naturally heated to 40 degrees where you can de-mud. Watching people wandering round like mud monsters is another part of the entertainment and there are cold showers to wash it all off after you’re done being a hippo wallowing; or a pig.
