Once an office block, this four storey building still looks office-block-esque, but in the same way that newer Holiday Inns do, with pale bricks and neat rows of identical windows on the outside and pale clean carpets on the inside. The Scottish Youth Hostel Association people have fitted 302 beds into this building, in configurations adding up to 22 rooms per floor, and are calling it a five star hostel. Like bed tetris you can then choose to sleep in anything from a single, private room to a double, to a family room to an eight bed dorm – all with ensuites – so it comes down to how many people you want to share a bathroom with.
Décor is simple clean and bright – office efficient. Pine bunks and white linen keep it simple, the few extra flounces come in the form of free internet access, a self catering stainless steel kitchen, a café and a licensed restaurant.
Only 10 minutes walk from Waverly Station, this hostel looks like it does what it says on the tin: an inexpensive, no frills place to lay your head, but in the same way that Ikea does no frills.
