The autumn air in Tuscany is heavy with truffles and other temptations; what better way to work up an appetite than with a brisk canter through the magical Tuscan hills? Or a day-long exploration of the countryside, perhaps on locally-bred Maremma horses in the company of butteri, the Italian cowboys of the region? Or do you prefer a multi-day route through medieval towns and vine-rich valleys?

If you want a stationary sojourn in comfortable lodgings, where you can also take classic lessons in a warm, familial atmosphere, try Rendola Riding, directed by British-born Jenny Bawtree: Rendola 66, Montevarchi (Arrezzo), Tuscany 52025 Italy.

Or for a five or seven-day treks through hills of chestnuts or Etruscan ruins, contact the English-speaking organizers of Colline e Sentieri (hills and trails): Podere Le Piane 158, I-58054 Murci (Grossetto), Italy.

If you want to immerse yourself in Maremma culture, contact La Scafarda (the word is the name of the saddle used by the butteri), Horseback riding holidays “La Scafarda” "
Castiglione della Pescaia (Grosseto) – Italy.
