Saddling up in Cyprus

If your trail ride is crossed with the scent of lemon blossoms, crushed olives, and fresh-baked bread, it is quite possible that you have opted for an equestrian vacation in Cyprus. This lush Mediterranean island juggles a complex history and a tradition of simple hospitality, experienced best on horse trails that wend their way through the interior (though dazzling oceanscapes are never too far away). A number of stables offer excursions by the hour or day; the Paradisos Hills Hotel near Lysos organizes trips of several hours up to two days. A group called Ride in Cyprus uses the Paradisos as a base for one-week or longer treks customized for up to four experienced riders on well-trained former racing horses. Accommodations while trekking are in Cyprus’ vaunted agriturism facilities, sometimes basic, always gracious. or
