India’s Pushkar Camel Fair is world-famous, and various riding holidays are based on that destination. But horse lovers should find the Balotra Horse Fair, held every March in Rajasthan, even more compelling, since it is less touristy and more focused on equine events. It dates back to the 14th century and – like Pushkar – has religious significance. Trips usually begin in Jodhpur and take about five days to cover the 164-kilometer distance to Tilwara (Balotra). Riders will find it thrilling to RIDE through the fair, returning each night to royal tents set up at the fairgrounds, some with toilets and hot showers. More thrilling still is the opportunity to bond with your Marwari mount. With their slender bodies, Arabian eyes, and wonderful curved ears, Marwaris alone are worth the trip. They are highly intelligent, so are not recommended for novices (or for people over 200 pounds). I fell in love with Chandrika (Moonbeam) at Royal Riding Holidays.
