Riding in the Ecuadorian Andes is always a breath-taking experience, not only because of the height but also the beauty of the verdant panoramas that unfold around you. The Hacienda Primavera Wilderness Ecolodge is sure to take your breath away, given its secluded location in the El Choco rainforest reserve, three hours northwest of Quito. Primavera’s 10 horses are all sure-footed Criollos; you will be matched to the horse best-suited to your ability and the seven different itineraries from which you can choose.

One of the most challenging is the waterfall hike: no problem for the horses but you need to be fit to climb down to the hidden waterfall once you arrive. If you don’t want to ride all day, every day, you can lounge by the pool, sample cheese being made in the lodge kitchen, hike, bird or butterfly watch, or laze in your room overlooking the jungle canopy. All horseback riding is included in the price; so are genuinely delicious gourmet meals by an outstanding chef. Door to door transportation can be arranged from Quito.
