Sentenced to death and guarded day and night by two of his shot gun wielding enemies in the Lincoln County Courthouse, Billy the Kid had noting left to lose so he planned a daring escape. On the 28th of April, 1881, the Kid got his chance, when one of his guards was out of the room he rounded on the other and stole his gun, shooting both guards then, undisturbed by any of the townspeople he made a leisured and well prepared escape. Instead of making for the border Billy then spent the next two months riding, quite relaxed it seems, all over the rocky mountains and desert terrain of New Mexico dropping in on various friends to tell them, casually, about his escape. Over confident that he wouldn’t be re-captured, he headed vaguely for home in Fort Sumner to get some money before he went for the border. By the time he made it to Fort Sumner he had travelled around 125 miles. His casual attitude was his undoing and he was shot while sneaking into a friends house to get a midnight feed after spending his evening visiting his sweethearts around town. Billy’s last ride around the impressive New Mexico plains and plateaus has been carefully documented and you can follow it yourself. Some of the land the trail crosses is private property so if you don’t want to be an outlaw like Billy the best way to do the ride is with an organised group. This will probably also give you the benefit of hearing about Billy’s escapades while sitting around the campfire (a bit like a grown up version of cowboys and Indians.) and you’ll also get to hear ‘Billy stories’ from the ranch owners who thrive on the daring by association that comes from past ranchers who harboured Billy on his final wanderings.
