Normally thought of as a surf and sun bathing beach holiday destination and very popular with the windsurfing community, Margarita Island is another place ideally explored on horseback. It’s relatively small and flat so the attraction is beach and coastal riding between interesting ports and colonial villages. The island’s interior is quite dry and there are large salt flats which are also a lot of fun to open up your horse on. This is an exotic destinations for wildlife as well, see desert critters and cacti in the interior, palm trees, iguanas and brightly coloured marine life on the cooler coast. This is obviously not a BYO horse destination, you’ll need to book with a guide service and decide on a route or, more popular on this small island, a selection of day trips run out of a central traditional ranch. Something a bit different for the experienced rider but this is really not a particularly challenging riding destination , but the beach and salt flats mean a chance to open up.
