The Ansel Adams and John Muir wilderness areas along with Mammoth’s backcountry steeped with mining and cowboy heritage are a perfect setting and terrain to be enjoyed on horseback. From a one hour trail ride to a week on a working horse drive this old frontier land makes a perfect backdrop with it’s canyons, alpine forests and clean glassy lakes (lots of good fishing) and steep rocky mountains. There are both ‘well trod’ and ‘off the beaten’ tracks. We’re talking big scenery and American heritage here, perfect for both beginners and people looking for a proper old horse back exploration adventure. Cyclists, hikers and fishermen will be your main contemporaries in the expanse of wilderness (edged on one side by famous Yosemite) as well as local wildlife.
