Only sea horses can take you directly over Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, but the stable at Dunk Island comes about as close as you can get. Of all the fabled island resorts in the proximity of the reef, Dunk is the only one with a farm and stable of well-tended horses that can offer you rides through the rainforest or along the beach. If you opt for an all-day ride you can do both. Plus there are shorter pony rides for children and sunset rides for romantics.

You can go with a small group or, as I did, arrange for a private canter by the ocean. The Dunk Island Resort is the only accommodation on the 2,500 acre island, and boasts 160 rooms of varying prices (depending on size and location) and three dining facilities. Riding packages will vary with the season and number of participants.
