The Tien-Shan (or “celestial mountains”) of Kyrgyzstan represent one of the longest and highest mountain ranges in Central Asia, and one of the most challenging regions for a horse trek.  Following an ancient Silk Roads trail from Son Kul Lake to the Torugart Pass overlooking China on handsome Kyrgy horses, you will see nature untouched by civilization – pristine valleys, jagged cliffs, and a pastoral way of life most people read about only in books.  Be prepared for hot, bright, 30 degree days and zero temperatures at night, with the occasional snow flurry  on steep mountain passes.   The horses on my ride were hand-picked by chief guide Domenico Mocchi, who is as tough as his charges.  When one horse was trapped in a mud hole, Dom waded in to the muck waist-deep to pull him out.    

I travelled with Wild Frontiers on a trip featuring star jockey Richard Dunwoody:  the chance to race next to him along the top of a dizzying ravine is itself a heavenly experience.
