Part of the Black Hills National Forest, this area of wilderness is known for its trails, tracks and dirt roads, ideal for horse riders. It’s become such a popular past time in these parts that there are several public use horse camps, including one which is free to use in winter, as well as the camps, dude ranches and tours which offer horses for hire. As well as horse riders you’ll come across cyclists, hikers and in winter skiers (this is where the winter scenes from ‘Dances with Wolves’ were filmed so winter is a popular time to visit.). Scenic highlights include Mount Rushmore and frontier type views and wildlife. Other activities include rock climbing, cycling, hiking and snowmobiling.
