The colour and myth of Bahia’s capital, Salvador do Bahia, capture most of the tourism to northeast Brazil, and the gorgeous beaches beckon the rest, but horse lovers can have their beach and ride it too. If you stay in upscale Praia do Forte (about an hour north of Salvador), you can walk to the village’s one riding facility, negotiate your price for an extended period of riding – several hours a day for a week or two, rather than a one-hour one-shot – and even specify which horse you want for your stay. You will be accompanied by a guide on your first outing; then, if it is clear you know how to ride, you will be given your horse and will be free to explore the Reserva Ecológica de Sapiranga, a 600-hectare forest that encompasses beach, hills, and forest.
