The Shirley Plantation is located about 10 miles away from Richmond. The plantation has been in the same family for eleven generations and continues to operate under their care. The plantation has survived many events including Bacon's Rebellion, the American Civil War, the American Revolution and the Great Depression.

The Shirley Plantation is the oldest family-owned business in North America dating back from 1638. The building now continues to be a working plantation, a private home, a growing business and a National Historic Landmark. The Shirley Plantation is open all year round from 9:30am to 4:30pm except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The grounds also contain Lady Cessalye's gift shop, bird watching educational programs and even animals located around the premises.
