Stop along Highway 49 at Sutter Gold Mine, a modern hard rock mine. The mine, originally opened for gold mining in the 1980s, now opens exclusively for one-hour underground tours. The excursions educate guests on the gold mining process, how it developed from gold panning and modern hydraulic mining techniques. All ages can find a day at the mine fun and interesting. A guided walking tour offers an educational experience, and there are several hands-on activities. Gemstone mining in mining flumes is popular with children as is geode cracking.
