The Appomattox Court House that stands now was built in 1892 and should not be mistaken for the original that was built in 1846 and destroyed in a fire in 1892. The old Appomattoox Court House was located three miles northeast and is where Lee surrendered to Grant and ended the American Civil War on April 9, 1865.

The town of Clover Hill, where old Appomattox Court House stood, is now preserved as a national shrine.

The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm with the exception of federal holidays during the winter. The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Years, Presidents Day and Martin Luther King Day.
