Zaanse Schans is something like an outdoor museum, with its windmills turning in rows and old orange roofed barns and buildings in between them. It's still a living ancient hamlet, albeit now a lot of the town's income comes from its attractive preservation in old fashioned state circa 16th - 17th Century. Not all of the buildings are original, some have been moved here to create a whole preserved town - even the residential properties - still in use - are period.
There's an indoor museum and a cheee making shop to complete the picture of the historic town.
