Tucked into a picturesque elbow-kink in the peaceful Vezere river, Uzerche is an elegant, romantic cluster of granite houses, sculpted around the sides of a hill, which peaks with the imposing Roman Abbey of Saint Pierre. You'll find an 11th century crypt, turreted and slate-roofed Renaissance-style architecture and dense, ancient woodland to explore here, as well various independent, local shops and restaurants, which help to maintain the 'Village Etape' reputation of which Uzerche's residents are so proud. This area is also celebrated for its rich, fertile land and prolific agricultural production, and as well as the famous russet-coloured Limousin cattle, there are also lakes and streams lavishly stocked with carp, perch and trout, enviably diverse wildlife (-this spot is popular with bird watchers) and heaps of wild mushrooms.
