A town seeped in history, there is plenty to satisfy the historian in Skofja Loka. Walking through the streets of the Old Town, which has been a protected area since 1987, you’ll notice crumbling houses, some dating back to the 16th Century.
Some of the most interesting sites to visit include the 18th Century Capuchin monastery, which has a library of medieval manuscripts, and Loka castle. The castle now houses the Loka museum, an interesting display, demonstrating one of the best ethnographical collections in Slovenia, splaying over two floors. The castle itself has impressive grounds (after walking up the hill to get to the castle, you will likely want to rest here!) and fantastic views of the town and surrounding areas.
Elsewhere, there is very little to do, especially in the summer months – during the holiday season, many restaurants and shops are (rather ironically) shut! But the river that runs through the town is, in places, clean enough to swim in and its hills and valleys make it an ideal area for hiking.
Skofja Loka has a distinct charm of its own which will enchant almost everyone, and the town at night, with the castle and the Old Town lit up, will really capture your imagination. You might find that a few days is enough time to explore and enjoy this alluring little town, but nevertheless it is worth a visit.
