Surrounded by muddy waters and mangroves, this colonial town is like the other end of the Mississippi arriving in Colombia. It’s not really the Mississippi that ambles along past the town though, it’s another old girl, the Magdalena River.
Mompos is the setting for Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel ‘Chronicle of a Death Foretold’, which is what draws many visitors in, who may otherwise never of heard of this cut off town. Before the book, Mompós was known for producing jewellery of hand woven gold filigree and rocking chairs. But things haven’t changed that much, one of the main attractions of the town is that many of the old white colonial buildings have survived, and even better, a lot of them are still being used for the same purpose. Including the City Hall, which is where the Act of Independence from Spain was signed – so beautiful and important historically.
The tricky bit is getting there – you have to come from Cartagena by bus then boat then car.
