In the month of August in New England you can witness striking waves of wild blueberries, sprawling throughout the 60,000 acres of Maine's indigenous fruit fields that date back to the time of native Americans. Each year, people of all ages and all states invade the sea of berries with rakes to bring in the harvest. Some even have their own custom-designed tools for this event - it's a real community thing.
And the harvest that attracts so many has a festival in its honour - the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival, held during the harvest month and consisting of everything blueberry, even a blueberry musical comedy: locally written, performed, and directed, this musical hints on everything berry, or blue. Naturally, the festival also has baking and pie-eating contests, more than 250 craft booths, races, and a blueberry festival quilt made each year to be displayed and raffled off at the end of the festival.
