It's impossible to get more 'now' than organic, sustainable and local in foodie terms these days, and that's what Cornwall's traditional industries of farming and fishing have long been all about, so it comes as no surprise that the South East Cornwall Taste Festival, based around the pretty, seaside resort town of Looe and adorable, pedestrianised fishing village Polperro, offers some of the UK's most exquisite seafood and best local produce. It only began in 2005 and is still relatively small-scale when compared with some of the UK's other taste festivals, but that's more than compensated for by the quality of the food and the setting. St Ives is a short drive away. Cornwall is undeniably often wild and windswept in October, but a brisk walk along an empty, wave-ravaged beach beneath towering cliffs followed by an enormous grilled Dover sole and mashed potatoes is hard to beat, as Autumn weekends go.
