Even people who don't enjoy wine like Sancerre; it's fresh, open, delicate and golden – a little bit like the Loire Valley area it's grown in, in fact, with its miles of gently undulating vineyards and lustrous, fertile fields. The city of Sancerre is no less enticing – a tangle of new and old-fashioned streets, elegantly ruined medieval churches and chateaux, and the Caves de la Mignonne, where the wine producers of all fourteen Sancerre villages come to offer up their latest and best as part of an annual Sancerre festival at the start of June. Taste to your heart's content, but try to remain level-headed enough to stop at nearby Chavignol for a baked goat's cheese salad lunch with one more glass.
