Maine's wooded mountains, wildflower meadows and clean, windswept shorelines are temptation enough for those who love outdoor pursuits or even just peace and quiet, but for five days around the end of July and start of August every year, it's time to take a break from them and do some serious eating at the Lobster Festival.

The waters around Maine are widely believed to yield the world's best lobsters (in terms of size and taste, though not always behaviour, if the kids' fancy dress parade is anything to go by) and Summer is lobster season. If you're prepared to forgive puns such as 'the Maine Event' and 'Maine Eating Tent', you'll be amply rewarded with a helping (or several) from the 20,000 pounds of freshly cooked lobster meat on offer, besides piles of mussels, shrimp (- American for 'enormous prawns') and clams cooked in a multitude of ways.

There'll also be a lobster crate race, a cooking contest, an arts and crafts fair, a 'marine tent' full of aquariums (inside which the children can 'meet before they eat', as it were), a carnival parade and the coronation of the Sea Goddess.
